Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (1949)
The Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others supersedes a number of earlier conventions that covered some aspects of forced prostitution. Signatories are charged with three obligations under the 1949 Convention: prohibition of trafficking, specific administrative and enforcement measures, and social measures aimed at trafficked persons.

The purpose of this Convention is to promote cooperation amongst Member States so that they may effectively deal with the various aspects of prevention, interdiction and suppression of trafficking in women and children; the repatriation and rehabilitation of victims of trafficking and prevent the use of women and children in international prostitution networks, particularly where the countries of the SAARC region are the countries of origin, transit and destination.

It documents vulnerabilities to and cases of exploitation and debt bondage, and the physical and sexual abuse that transgender sex workers endure on a daily basis.
